At Whitsunday Holidays, we spend our days helping guests plan unforgettable Hamilton Island escapes. But every now and then, we get the chance to step away from our desks and experience the island just like our guests do.
Recently, our Reservations Manager, Clare, spent a week on Hamilton Island with her husband Cliffy and their two children, Georgia (11) and Byron (13). From family adventures and wildlife encounters to beachfront coffees and unforgettable tours, here’s what made their holiday so special.
The Perfect Start: Fishi on Arrival
After travelling to Hamilton Island, the last thing anyone feels like doing is cooking dinner. Clare’s family kicked off their holiday with a seafood platter from Fishi for the adults and fresh sushi for the kids.
“It was the perfect first-night meal. We could simply relax, settle in and enjoy our first evening without having to cook or head out again. And it was absolutely delicious!”
A Family Favourite: Putt Putt Golf
When asked about her favourite activity, Georgia didn’t hesitate.
“Putt putt golf!”
The Hamilton Island Mini Golf course was an instant hit and provided plenty of laughs and family competition. A simple activity that turned out to be one of the highlights of the entire trip.
Byron’s Pick: Go Karting
For 13-year-old Byron, there was one clear winner.
“Go karting!”
In fact, he enjoyed it so much he went twice during the week. If you have teenagers in tow, Hamilton Island’s go-kart track continues to be one of the island’s most popular attractions.
Early Morning Coffee at Sails
While the kids were busy planning their next adventure, Clare and Cliffy found their own slice of paradise.
Every morning at 7am, they wandered down to Sails for coffee.
“There was hardly anyone around. We’d sit on the beautiful new beachfront lounges and tables, coffee in hand, looking out over Catseye Beach. It became our favourite daily ritual.”
Sometimes it’s the simplest moments that become the most memorable.
Wildlife Everywhere
One of the things that surprised Clare most was the sheer amount of wildlife.
“The kids absolutely loved it. I’ve never seen so many animals!”
Wallabies grazed throughout the island, colourful lorikeets and cockatoos appeared daily, and possums regularly visited the patio in the evenings.
For children especially, Hamilton Island’s wildlife can feel like a real-life nature documentary.
Sweet Treats at HIYO
Another family favourite was the new frozen yoghurt outlet, HIYO at Sails.
The kids loved creating their own frozen yoghurt masterpieces, making it the perfect afternoon treat after a day of exploring.
Heated Pools and Relaxation
Both Bougainvillea Pool and the Sails Pool looked fantastic and are ideal for cooler winter days when a heated swim is especially inviting.
Trying Something New: Pickleball
One of the newer additions to Hamilton Island is the pickleball courts, and Clare’s family couldn’t resist giving them a try.
Fast-paced, fun and easy to learn, it’s a great activity for families looking to do something a little different during their stay.
The Standout Experience: Ocean Rafting’s Full Day Eco Adventure
When asked for the overall highlight of the week, Clare didn’t need to think twice.
“The Full Day Eco Adventure Tour with Ocean Rafting was honestly one of the best tours I’ve ever done from Hamilton Island.”
Running from 9am to 3.30pm, the tour strikes the perfect balance between seeing the best of the Whitsundays without committing to an extremely long day.
What makes it unique is that it combines all three iconic Whitsunday experiences:
Unlike many tours, Clare never felt rushed.
“The boats are so fast that you have plenty of time at each location.”
The family snorkelled at Windy Bay, a location Clare had never visited before.
“The visibility was incredible — the best I’ve seen in years. We even snorkelled alongside a turtle for ages. It was such a special experience.”
To top it all off, they travelled aboard the aptly named LOVE SHACK, which departed Hamilton Island Marina with music pumping and an energetic crew that made the entire day fun from start to finish.
“The crew were amazing. It was just a fantastic day all round.”
Sunset in Style Aboard Rascal
No Hamilton Island holiday would be complete without time on the water.
One evening, the family joined a two-hour sunset cruise aboard Rascal.
With stunning Whitsunday sunsets, luxury surroundings and a wonderful crew, it was the perfect way to finish another day in paradise.
So, What Was the Verdict?
After spending a week exploring, relaxing and making memories, Clare’s biggest takeaway was simple:
“Hamilton Island really does have something for everyone.”
Whether you’re travelling with young children, teenagers, extended family or simply looking for a relaxing escape, it’s the combination of beautiful scenery, incredible experiences and easy island living that keeps guests returning year after year.
And after hearing Clare’s stories, we can certainly see why.
